This paper provides the perspective of an international group of experts (ENASPOC) on the role of CRP POCT and other complementary strategies to improve antibiotic stewardship in primary care, with regards to the diagnosis and treatment of children (6-to 14 years) presenting with symptoms of acute RTIs.
Among many other useful information an algorithm and instructions about the use and interpretation of CRP is provided as well as a table with selected messages to be delivered by the physician to the parents.

Dr. Aggy York, an NHS GP Urgent and Primary Care clinical lead at Heywood Middleton and Rochdale ICS in the UK, highlights the need to tackle AMR and writes about her experience with CRP POCT in Middleton and Rochdale. She asks for CRP POCT to become a significant component of the UK’s wider strategy to become effective across all areas of Britain.

The Library of the Madrid Press Association was the venue chosen for this event, which was attended by, among others, Reyes Castillo, from the Coordination Unit of the National Plan against Resistance to Antibiotics PRAN, and by Jesús Ortega and José María Molero, coordinator and member of the semFYC (Primary Care Scientific Society) Infectious Diseases GoT, respectively. They discussed about the importance of rapid diagnostic tests such as CRP POC tests to reduce diagnostic uncertainty and to reduce antibiotic prescribing in primary care.

Sala Stampa Nazionale / National Press OfficeProf. Annamaria Staiano, Prof. Ivan Gentile held a press conference at the 21. March at the Sala Stampa in Milano together with Dr. Silvestro Scotti, Secretary General of FIMMG - the Italian Federation of General Practitioners, to raise awareness about the growing issue of AMR due to inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics. 20 journalists attended in person or remotely (6).
This resulted in more than 100 articles in national, regional and trade media.

TV Interview about AMR in UK

Dr. Aggy York Fuels Media discussions across the United Kingdom on the issue of AMRDr. Aggy York, an NHS GP Urgent and Primary Care clinical lead at Heywood Middleton and Rochdale ICS in the UK, attended the ENASPOC Antibiotic Stewardship Conference in Nov. 2022. Beginning of 2023 she spoke to media outlets across the United Kingdom (TV and on radio) about the overuse of antibiotics and the availability of CRP point-of-care testing to support decision making about antibiotic prescribing. Several media outlets covered the story in print and online.
This resulted in 11 articles online across national, regional, trade and broadcast titles with an estimated 21.3m total readership/impressions.

Recommendations from a European Expert Panel. Diagnostics 2023; 13(320).This is the first publication from our "ENASPOC Expert group on CRP point of care testing to guide antibiotic prescriptions for respiratory illness”. The publication gives a broad overview about the use of CRP POCT including its implementation and barriers and concludes:
“Through the realization of a better reimbursement structure, the inclusion in standardized procedures in local guidelines, and better patient education, CRP point-of-care testing can represent a cornerstone in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.”
